Problem accessing some existing records of people with accented letters in their name (bug?)

Hello everyone,

While exploring a tree (not mine) here, I found this page: https://gw.geneanet.org/leroysylvain?n=delperdange&oc=&p=marie+anne, in which the "é" characters in the name of the spouse appear as little squares. When clicking on the name, an error page shows up.

It seems obvious to me that there is an existing page for this person.

How would I go about accessing it?

Thanks!
Michael

You should write to the owner:
Thanks, I had done it. But the reason I write here is that I wonder if that might not be to changes in the underlying software (of Geneanet) since these records were put online (2002).

Best,
Michael

I can't answer for Geneanet, but I think there would be more trees with the same problem if it was just a change in their software.

The member has imported his family tree from an incorrect GEDCOM file format. We can't correct it.

Thanks for your reply. But if the format was incorrect to begin with, why did Geneanet let it be imported? More pragmatically, and as the owner doesn't reply, is there a way such links could be corrected globally (it appears clear that it has [only?] to do with the encoding of accented characters)?

The GEDCOM file format was correct but the encoding of accented characters was not. You can import a GEDCOM file with incorrect accented characters to any genealogy website or software.

We suggest that you contact the member at https://en.geneanet.org/profil/leroysylvain

Thank you for your reply.

As to contacting that member (who has not connected to the site for a month now), as I already wrote here three days ago I have already done this, but not heard back from him yet.

I am quite aware of this. But I posted this here (in addition to writing to the tree administrator) because I thought that:
  • 1. Such errors might affect other trees than just this one.
  • 2. Such errors can be globally fixed (encoding errors used to be pretty common - and still are - before the advent of Unicode because of different encodings on different platforms; but in many cases they can be identified and fixed). Here there clearly are records, which are indexed by Geneanet, yet are not accessible from that indexing... So the indexing has to be fixed so as to produce correct URLs.

This is now identified when importing a GEDCOM file and most of them support accented characters.

This GEDCOM file has been imported years ago from a genealogy software which does not exist anymore for years. We can't make corrections in a family tree. The member must be asked to do it.

Thanks for your reply. I take it from the "this is now identified" that it was not so before... So wouldn't that be an incentive to retrocorrect previous records? What if their owners stop being active for any reason (including demise), would that make these records unavailable for ever? This would be pretty unfortunate, I think that the added value of such a site is the permanence of the rich information it holds...
