Looking to find more info on his Father: Charles Minnis, and mother Marie Pattie. Does anyone have sources or info on the father and mother, or even further back on that branch of the Minnis family in Ireland? Charles W. Minnis was b.1833 in Newtonards, County Down. He immigrated to the US in 1851 and married Margaret Ann Woods on 14 JUL 1859 in Trenton, New Jersey, and by 1880 he was living in the town of Minburn, Dallas county, Iowa. I would like to uncover more info on his parents Charles and Marie. Please let me know.

The Ros Davies site mentions your ancestors, and indicates the family lived in Brackney:

http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~rosdavies/genealogy/SURNAMES/M/Mi.htm

That’s nowhere near Newtownards though. It's in the parish of Kilkeel 30 miles to the south. Charles Minnis is listed as farming there in the tithe applotment records for 1830.

http://www.irishgenealogyhub.com/down/tithe-applotment-books/kilkeel-parish.php

Griffiths Valuation for 1862 calls the townland Brackenagh East. There was a Joseph & Thomas Minnis farming there by then. (Presumably Charles had died). They had plots 2 to 7 plus a communal share of the nearby mountain top (for grazing sheep, digging turf etc). The farm today is on the modern Brackenagh East Rd a few miles north of Kilkeel.

There was still a Minnis family there in 1901 & 1911:

Family was Presbyterian so they probably attended either Annalong, Mourne or Kilkeel Presbyterian churches. All have records which start around 1840 so getting back much before that will be tricky. I’d start with Mourne as it’s where at least 1 Minnis married. (Tradition was to marry in the bride’s church).

Thomas Minnis died in 1880 aged 69, so born around 1811. A brother to Charles who married Marie Pattie perhaps?

I don’t see a death for Joseph, so he may have died before 1864 which is when death registration began. Nicholas Minnis in the 1901 census was the son of Thomas. Here’s his marriage:

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1873/11284/8139790.pdf

Here’s a marriage in 1848 for Margaret Minnis, daughter of Charles. So a sibling to your Charles W. Minnis:

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1848/09350/5385870.pdf

The above marriage was in Ballymartin Congregational church. I don’t think any baptism records have survived for that church.

1867 marriage for Margaret Minnis, daughter of Thomas, in Mourne Presbyterian church:

A few probate abstracts:

The Will of Thomas Minnis late of Brackney County Down Farmer who died 1 August 1880 at same place was proved at Belfast by Nicholas Minnis of Brackney Farmer the sole Executor.

Minnis Annie of Brackney Kilkeel county Down spinster died 3 February 1930 at Saintfield in said county Administration Belfast 5 September to Mary Jane Minnis spinster. Effects £11 9s. 7d.

My husband has Minnis ancestors from County Down. I have a small tree for him on Ancestry. His grandmother was Gertrude Minnis from Scarva. They had connections to Pattersons as well. Esther Patterson, daughter of Gertrude Minnis had a brother who moved to Canada. The Pattersons at one time lived in Belfast .

[email protected]. My husband would be very interested in fining more Minnis relatives for his tree and yes, as per another post the Minnises were Presbyterian. I believe that they originally came from Scotland and they also had links to the Forbes family as this name was sometimes tagged in before Minnis.

This is James & Gertrude’s marriage:

Gertude in 1901 (born in Belfast):

Gertrude’s birth:

William & Essie’s marriage in 1897:

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1897/10467/5811950.pdf

In addition to Gertrude, William & Essie appear to have had the following children:

Essie 24.12.1902
Margaret 14.4.1905
Thomas 20.5.1907
Mary 8.4.1910 Scarva
William 19.7.1913

All were born in Belfast except for Mary in Scarva. Can’t find the whole family in 1911 but here’s some of the children:

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Down/Scarva/Scarva/209637/

Being Presbyterian and living in Co. Down does point to Scottish origins. Half the population of Co Down and adjacent counties are descended from Scots who settled there mainly in the 1600s.

Hope the above helps a bit.

Dear Elwyn Soutter, yes this is my husband’s family! I have been looking for details on where William Patterson is buried but there are a couple of them. One died on a number 55 bus if I remember correctly. Are you related too? My husband has found an aunt Isobel who is still alive and living in Bangor County Down. She is Isobel Minnis and now in her 70’s. We tried to find a Jacqueline Lemon from Belfast with no luck. There was also a Billy Lemon who joined the army possibly during the Troubles. My husband’s mother Esther Patterson lived in Dorchester street, which is no longer there. An aunt Mimi Thompson was killed when the carpet shop next door to the Salvation Army Citadel where she worked was blown up in 1971 on the sixth of December. The family had moved from Scarva to Sandy Row. I have been to Belfast and to Bangor but not to Scarva. It would nice if we knew where we could find some family graves in Scarva. We visited St Ann’s Presbyterian Church in Belfast and found a record of my husband’s parents’ marriage. We stood where Dorchester Street used to be. Isobel Minnis showed us photos of Tommy Minnis and William Patterson and some others.

The Belfast Telegraph of 10th December 1971 has a number of death notices relating to what looks to be Mimi (Elizabeth Thompson). One describes her as dearly loved wife of Thomas, mother of Margaret & Lillian. Funeral from her home 2 Linfield Rd.

Another is from daughter Lily and son in law Billy, and grandchildren. 28 Bentham St. (That may be the Billy you mention).

Another is from daughter Margaret and son in law Jim.

Another is from sister Rose and brother in law James.

Another from sister Margaret, 6 Lawyer St.

You ask about graveyards in Scarva. Scarva Presbyterian church has a graveyard so I’d start with it. Failing that try the Church of Ireland (Many Presbyterians were buried in Church of Ireland graveyards). It can be difficult because sometimes families had burial plots in unexpected places eg where they had lived 100 years previously.

Finding William Patterson may be tricky. There’s about 200 of them in the 1911 census. Do you know where he lived? I can see from the 1918 marriage certificate he was a manager. Do you know what he managed? Was it a mill by any chance? (I see a possible family in the census where the William managed a mill, but am not sure). The family that has a James b c 1892 and a William Ernest Patterson (the name of a witness to the marriage in 1918):

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Down/Newry_South/High_Street__part_of/256719/

If so I’d be looking for graveyards in Newry or Armagh where that William was born.

The second link is definitely my husband’s family with Florence Gertrude Patterson. Also those newspaper reports are for Mimi’s death. Thank you.

Some possible deaths you might want to look at for William Patterson registered in Newry:

11.3.1930 aged 73
14.4.1930 aged 55
25.6.1935 aged 73
25.9.1935 aged 69
18.6.1937 aged 75

You can view the original certificates on-line on the GRONI website, using the “search registrations” option:

https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk

You will need to open an account and buy some credits. It costs £2.50 (sterling) to a view a certificate.
